4 Reasons to Consider the Wear Layer When Buying LVP Floors

WHAT IS THE WEAR LAYER

The wear layer is essential for Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring because it provides the main barrier against daily wear and tear, protecting the floor's appearance and durability. It is a clear protective coating that adds durability and resilience to the flooring.

Under the wear layer is a decorative paper layer that gives the flooring the color and pattern that makes LVP among the most beautiful flooring options you can find.  The wear layer’s job is to shield the decorative layer from foot traffic, scratches, stains, and general wear and tear to ensure the floors last for many years.

WHAT IS IT MADE OF

The wear layer is typically made of clear PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or urethane and may be enhanced with additives for additional performance:

1. PVC: A highly durable form of plastic, it’s common in standard LVP wear layers, creating a tough, flexible barrier.

2. Urethane or Enhanced Polyurethane: Often used in higher-end products, this material offers better scratch resistance and can also be low-maintenance.

3. Additives (e.g., Aluminum Oxide): Some premium LVP products incorporate aluminum oxide or other hard particles in the urethane layer to increase abrasion resistance.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN SHOPPING

The wear layer is a crucial factor when selecting LVP flooring.  The thicker the wear layer, the longer the floors will last.  In addition, the additives and formulas applied to the flooring can enhance durability even more.

Importantly, the thickness of the wear layer and special additives used will add cost to the products.  So, when shopping for LVP, selecting a cheaper product, likely means you’re likely missing out on upgrades manufacturers put into the floors to increase durability.

The wear layer thickness can vary (from about 6 mils to over 20 mils), with thicker layers generally providing more robust protection, suitable for commercial or high-traffic residential settings.

THE 4 REASONS IT MATTERS

1. Scratch and Stain Resistance: A thick wear layer helps guard against scratches, scuffs, and stains, which can be especially important in high-traffic or pet-friendly homes.

2. Longevity: The wear layer determines how long the floor can maintain its look before showing signs of wear. Thicker wear layers generally mean a longer-lasting floor, making it a good choice for areas with heavy use.

3. Maintenance: A thicker wear layer makes cleaning and maintaining the floor easier. Dirt and spills are less likely to penetrate or damage the surface, keeping it looking new.

4. Warranty and Performance: Many manufacturers base their warranties on wear layer thickness. A thicker wear layer often comes with a longer warranty and higher performance assurances.
